So Christmas this year shall prove to be different.
My mom (aunts/friend and usual holiday dinner attendees) have decided to heck with Christmas this year, they are going on vacation. I shouldn't really be surprised, they have been threatening this for years. One year my family did take off at Christmas. Not just my mom and my aunt, but my brothers too. They decided to go to Disneyworld without me, since I was still in University and writing exams. I shit you not. They left, going to the one place I reaaallllly want to go, and then to add insult to injury they all took pictures with my favourite character: Pooh as special gifts for me. They did come back on Christmas eve though, so technically I saw them on Christmas. However, they decided to 'cancel' Christmas since they had had a vacation and weren't in the mood for anything else.
Ho Hum Pigs Bum.
So this time, it's just mom and the 'gals' that are leaving. I'm actually happy that my mom is going away. She needs some relaxing time. She's been working hard, and this year decided she would go back to school to become an ESL teacher. Not an easy thing to do when you're that...errrm..age.
Then, Sunday, Mr. Sass' parents decided to drop the bomb that they are going home to BC for Christmas and leaving on the 19th. Yup. Both parents have abandoned their young. We've decided to celebrate at other times with the family. This weekend (too early if you ask me!) is Mr. Sass' family and in the new year: mine. It was suggested to me that I could do something for the 'kids'. Yeah right. Not a chance. I know what I'm dealing with and it would be a miracle if I got any help and even more of a miracle if the SIL didn't kill any one of the brothers (including mine). So I am opting for a quiet Christmas eve "wine and finger foods" evening for anyone who wants to come. Anyone.
Hella's family is my second family and she has graciously invited us there, so if that offer still stands I'll be amongst people I love and adore as much as (or maybe more than) my family!
As a good friend said, "perhaps it's time to start new traditions."
Amen, dear.
Amen.

I can't imagine! Even thinking about not being around my family for the holidays blows!
God bless Hella and her family!!!
I would love to join you for wine and finger foods!
Oh, and Pooh is my favorite too! I nicknamed my dad Poo after that cuddly little bear.
Sigh, a Christmas Eve without the in-law's - sounds divine!! Sorry you are choked, though.
Pusher Robot - Hella is the best, and so is her family! A perfect "substitute family"
Randi - I'll keep the light on for you. When you coming?
Cori - I just find it funny that everyone has decided to up and leave this year! In a small way I'm liking the sound of it. It's something different.
Sassy.....YEE HAW.....You are comin for christmas!! Okay I am giving my mom the go ahead to order the turkey bird big this year....of course you are still welcome..you know you guys always are!!!
I remember the first Thankgiving I spent away from my folks. I actually went on vacation to the mountains, and should have been really fun. But I missed my mommy. Over the years we have spent less and less time with family members, and it has become very stress free! Now we just stay home and cook lots of food, and feed whoever shows up. It's kinda nice!
The wife and I are going to be alone this Christmas...
I'm honestly not that sad about it. ;)
