Today's lesson: our friends in Newfoundland. Commonly called Newfies. However, I must point out that for the second time this week I am apparently using a derogatory term.
The east coast of Canada breeds a whole different kind of folk. I guess that can be said about the west coast and prairies too. Okay, so every province has their stereotypes, especially if you are looking at it as an 'outsider'. I'll save those stereotypes for another day, as amusing as they are. The east coast breeds some of the most down to earth and kind people ever. They would invite you into their homes upon meeting you, and treat you as a member of their family. Their toothless grins and stories of fishing-boat drama will have you in stitches. However, they also have the reputation of being..well...not the brightest. Newfies in particular are seen as a whole different breed of their own. Although friendly, it is often hard to understand just what the heck they are saying, and it can't all be blamed on quality Canadian beer. I'll leave you with a little conversation between 2 newfies. See if you understand what the hell is going on. By reading it, you will inadvertently be speaking like a newfie too:
Bob: M R ducks
Doug: M R not ducks!
Bob: O S A R! C D E D B D wings?
Doug: Whale oil beef hooked! M R ducks!
I know. Not much of a lesson. I'm on holidays. Give me a break.
